500 Afghanis Siberian Crane

Afghanistan issued this coin in 1978 under the short-lived Daoud Khan republic, just months before the April Saur Revolution brought a Soviet-backed communist government to power — making this one of the final numismatic products of that administration. The Siberian crane (Leucogeranus leucogeranus) was listed by the IUCN as endangered at the time, and its appearance here reflects the WWF-linked wildlife conservation series that circulated through several issuing authorities during the late 1970s.

The dual KM references indicate proof and uncirculated variants were struck separately, a common arrangement for these limited-issue conservation pieces produced primarily for the collector export market rather than domestic circulation.
