Obverse description The coat of arms of the Republic of Afghanistan occupies the central field, depicting a stylised eagle with spread wings facing right, surmounted by a rising sun motif. The eagle is flanked on either side by symmetrical wheat sheaves, symbolising agricultural prosperity. An Arabic legend inscribed on a ribbon or scroll at the base of the arms includes the country name and date in the Afghan calendar. The Latin legend 'REPUBLIC OF AFGHANISTAN' arcs along the upper periphery, with the Gregorian year '1978' positioned in the lower field beneath the arms.

Additional information

Afghanistan issued this coin in 1978 under the short-lived Daoud Khan republic, just months before the April Saur Revolution brought a Soviet-backed communist government to power — making this one of the final numismatic products of that administration. The Siberian crane (Leucogeranus leucogeranus) was listed by the IUCN as endangered at the time, and its appearance here reflects the WWF-linked wildlife conservation series that circulated through several issuing authorities during the late 1970s.

The dual KM references indicate proof and uncirculated variants were struck separately, a common arrangement for these limited-issue conservation pieces produced primarily for the collector export market rather than domestic circulation.
