Leutkirch's Oberamt issued this 500,000 Mark note during the summer of 1923, when Reichsbank currency was losing purchasing power faster than it could be physically printed and distributed. Regional authorities across Württemberg were effectively forced into emergency issuance — not by legal mandate, but by the practical collapse of the supply chain for official currency. The Oberamtssparkasse acted as the administrative backbone for this kind of municipal notgeld, using whatever printing capacity was locally available.
The watermarked paper is notable for a series at this inflationary tier, suggesting stock prepared in advance rather than improvised production.
