A circular official seal of the Mecklenburg-Schwerinsches Staatsministerium appears at lower left, accompanied by five facsimile ministry signatures below the issuer's name and the date "Schwerin, den 10. Mecklenburg-Schwerin's state ministry issued its own emergency currency during the hyperinflation peak of 1923, when the Reichsbank's supply of banknotes could not keep pace with the collapsing mark. Regional and municipal authorities across Germany were legally permitted — then effectively required — to fill the gap with locally authorized Notgeld, and denominations escalated from thousands to billions within months. A 500,000 Mark note was already obsolescent shortly after printing; by November 1923, a single US dollar bought over four trillion marks.
