Kreis Adenau was a small rural district in the Eifel region of the Rhineland, and its Kreissparkasse — a district savings bank rather than a major commercial institution — was among hundreds of local bodies forced into emergency currency issuance during the hyperinflation peak of 1923. By the time 500,000-Mark denominations were being printed at the district level, the Reichsbank's own output could not keep pace with the velocity of price collapse; municipalities, savings banks, and even private firms filled the gap with Notgeld.
The sheer number of issuing bodies in the Rhineland during this period means attribution and catalog classification remain messy — district-level pieces like this are frequently underdocumented compared to city issues.
