The city arms of Rottweil — a double-headed eagle on a shield — appear at upper left, while a vignette of a half-timbered historic building occupies the upper centre within a dotted rectangular border. The denomination is rendered in large Fraktur script across the middle of the note, with the issuing authority's payment obligation stated below in a smaller hand. A boxed validity notice and the place and date of issue are set in a line beneath, followed by two manuscript signature lines for the Stadtschultheiss and the Stadtpfleger. |

Rottweil's 500,000 Mark note is Notgeld — emergency municipal currency issued as hyperinflation dismantled the Reichsmark's purchasing power in 1923. By mid-year, the Reichsbank simply could not print fast enough to meet demand, and hundreds of German cities and towns took matters into their own hands. Rottweil, one of Baden-Württemberg's oldest towns, was no exception.
Municipal Notgeld of this denomination was typically short-lived in circulation — within weeks of issue, inflation rendered even 500,000 Mark notes functionally worthless, and higher denominations followed in rapid succession.
