This note is a product of Düsseldorf's brief period of French and Belgian military occupation — the Ruhr occupation that began in January 1923 — which severely disrupted the city's access to Reichsbank currency supplies. Municipal authorities across the occupied zone were forced to issue their own emergency Notgeld to keep local wages and commerce moving, and Düsseldorf's city administration was among the most prolific issuers. By mid-1923, hyperinflation had already rendered earlier denominations worthless within weeks of printing.
The suffix variants d through g in the DeNG listing almost certainly reflect successive print runs as the denomination was reused across different paper stocks or overprint batches — common practice when a press run was exhausted faster than the next could be authorized.
