Issued to commemorate the 1999 Golden Wedding anniversary of King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) and Queen Sirikit, this is the highest-denomination note ever issued by the Bank of Thailand — by an enormous margin. Five hundred thousand baht placed it far beyond any practical transactional use; it was a commemorative instrument from the outset, never intended to circulate. The production run was tightly controlled, sold at face value to registered applicants through the Bank of Thailand, and demand vastly exceeded supply.
Printed in-house at the Bank of Thailand Printing Works rather than through an overseas security printer, which was atypical for prestige Thai commemorative issues of the period.
