Bielefeld occupies an unusual place in German hyperinflation history — the city's institutions were early adopters of Notgeld printed on unconventional materials, including linen and leather, though this Gundlach-printed issue stays with paper. By late 1923, when this 500-billion-Mark note was struck, the denomination itself had become nearly meaningless within weeks of printing; the Rentenmark stabilization came in November, rendering the entire series obsolete almost immediately.
Gundlach was a local firm, which kept turnaround tight when the Reichsbank could no longer supply currency fast enough. Schreiber's design credit is rare to see named at this tier of emergency municipal finance.
