China's Lunar Series silver kilo coins (of which this 5 oz piece is part) were issued by the People's Bank of China under a program that expanded dramatically through the 1990s and into the 2000s as international collector demand for Chinese precious metal issues grew. The 2002 Horse issue coincides with the Year of the Ren Wu — the yang water horse — the 7th year in the 60-year sexagenary cycle, not merely the 7th in the 12-year zodiac rotation.
Mintages for these issues were tightly controlled and never published with full transparency by the PBC, a consistent policy that has fueled secondary market speculation for decades.
