| 表面の説明 | Central depiction of the Dacheng Hall (大成殿) of the Confucian Temple in Qufu, rendered in fine detail with its characteristic double-eaved roof, stone balustrades, and ceremonial staircase leading to the entrance. The legend 中华人民共和国 (People's Republic of China) arcs across the upper field in Chinese characters. Below the architectural motif, the inscription 曲阜大成殿 (Dacheng Hall, Qufu) appears, with the date 1990 beneath it in the lower field. The proof surface provides a deeply mirrored background contrasting with the finely frosted architectural relief. |

The 1990 Chinese Lunar series 50 Yuan silver kilo — technically a five-ounce piece — was struck by the People's Mint at a moment when China's commemorative coin program was aggressively courting Western bullion investors. The program had launched in 1981 with the Year of the Rooster and had, by 1990, established enough of a secondary market that mintages were being deliberately constrained to sustain collector premiums.
KM#284 exists in two distinct varieties: one with a privy mark and one without, issued for different distribution channels. The privy-marked version was produced for the World Coin Fair in Berlin.
