Issued in anticipation of the 1997 handover, this coin was struck a full year before the actual transfer of sovereignty — a deliberate political statement that Beijing considered the outcome settled long before the Union Flag came down. The handover itself ended 156 years of British colonial administration, rooted in the cession terms following the First Opium War and later expanded through the 1898 Convention that leased the New Territories for 99 years. That lease expiration was the practical trigger; the rest was negotiated through the 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration.
