| Reverse description | A panoramic view of the Hong Kong skyline rendered in fine relief occupies the lower portion of the field, with sailing vessels in the harbor. At center, the text of the Basic Law of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region is depicted as an open book or document, framed by flowering olive branches. The legend 中华人民共和国香港特别行政区基本法 (Basic Law of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China) appears on the central document in Chinese characters. The bilingual outer legend reads 香港过渡 / 平稳转型 in Chinese and SMOOTH TRANSITION LONG-THEY PROSPERITY in Latin script along the periphery. The denomination 50元 is inscribed in the lower field. |

| Additional information |
Issued in anticipation of the 1997 handover, this coin was struck a full year before the actual transfer of sovereignty — a deliberate political statement that Beijing considered the outcome settled long before the Union Flag came down. The handover itself ended 156 years of British colonial administration, rooted in the cession terms following the First Opium War and later expanded through the 1898 Convention that leased the New Territories for 99 years. That lease expiration was the practical trigger; the rest was negotiated through the 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration.
Gold commemoratives from this series were struck in multiple weights simultaneously, with the 1/2 troy ounce format — this piece — occupying the middle of a five-coin range.
