The Bank of China's 1940 issues were printed in New York because Japanese occupation had severed access to Chinese printing facilities capable of this quality of intaglio work. The American Bank Note Company had a long relationship with Chinese banking institutions stretching back decades, and the plates were prepared and run entirely in New York before shipment to Free China.
P#87 is among the higher denominations in this wartime series — at 50 Yuan, a significant face value at a moment when inflation was already beginning to erode Nationalist currency. By the mid-1940s, hyperinflation would render such notes essentially worthless in circulation.
