Issued in 1998 to mark the centenary of Zhou Enlai's birth — he was born on March 5, 1898, in Huaian, Jiangsu — this coin reflects the ongoing rehabilitation and official glorification of Zhou that accelerated after Deng Xiaoping's consolidation of power. Zhou had remained politically untouchable even during the Cultural Revolution, a rarity among senior CCP figures, and his death in January 1976 triggered public mourning at Tiananmen Square that the Gang of Four attempted to suppress, directly precipitating their downfall later that year.
