The National Liberation Front's 1968 currency series was a political instrument as much as a monetary one — designed to assert the NLF's legitimacy as a governing authority in liberated zones of South Vietnam. This 50 Xu denomination was prepared but never formally released into circulation, making it genuinely rare; most examples that survive did so in uncut sheets or small lots that never reached the distribution network.
The NLF issued currency sporadically through the late 1960s, primarily in rural areas where Saigon's piasters were politically unacceptable or physically unavailable. The non-issuance of this particular denomination likely reflects the disruption caused by the Tet Offensive, launched in January 1968, which shattered the administrative capacity of NLF networks for months afterward.
