The Dalmatian pelican, Pelecanus crispus, breeds in fragmented colonies across Central Asian wetlands including the Aral Sea basin — a region whose ecological collapse from Soviet-era irrigation diversion made the species' presence there increasingly precarious by the time this coin was struck.
