Kazakhstan launched its wildlife conservation coin series in the early 2000s as the country was still establishing its post-Soviet monetary institutions, using collector issues to project national identity through endemic fauna. The Dalmatian pelican, Pelecanus crispus, breeds in fragmented colonies across Central Asian wetlands including the Aral Sea basin — a region whose ecological collapse from Soviet-era irrigation diversion made the species' presence there increasingly precarious by the time this coin was struck.
Mintage figures for individual issues in this series were kept low by the National Bank, typically in the low thousands.
