Issued to mark the 40th anniversary of the Soviet Luna 17 mission, which in November 1970 delivered Lunokhod 1 to the Mare Imbrium — the first remote-controlled rover to operate on another world. The mission was a genuine engineering triumph: the eight-wheeled vehicle traveled over 10 kilometers across the lunar surface across nearly 11 months of operation, far exceeding its planned three-month lifespan.
Kazakhstan's claim to the subject is not arbitrary. Lunokhod 1 launched from Baikonur Cosmodrome, which remains operational on Kazakh soil under a lease agreement with Russia.
