Gabiden Mustafin was one of Soviet Kazakhstan's most prominent Kazakh-language novelists, best known for his 1949 Stalin Prize-winning novel Millioner. This coin was issued as part of Kazakhstan's ongoing commemorative series honoring figures of Kazakh literature and culture — a program that accelerated sharply in the early 2000s as the republic worked to construct a post-Soviet national identity rooted in pre-Soviet and Soviet-era Kazakh intellectual heritage. Mustafin died in 1985, meaning this issue came seventeen years after his death.
