Applied Currency Concepts produced a series of novelty "state dollars" to coincide with various American statehood anniversaries, and this Alaska piece dates to what the issuer frames as 1959 — the year Alaska achieved statehood. These are not legal tender in any jurisdiction and carry no monetary value. Sheldon Jackson was a Presbyterian missionary and federal education agent who played a significant role in introducing reindeer herding to Alaska in the 1890s, attempting to address food scarcity among indigenous coastal populations.
