Obverse description Central field dominated by the bold Japanese characters 五拾錢 (50 Sen) flanked symmetrically by two confronted ho-ō (phoenix) birds rendered in high relief, their elaborate tail feathers sweeping downward to meet a stylized paulownia and cherry blossom spray at the base. The imperial chrysanthemum seal appears prominently at the top of the field, flanked by the outstretched wings of the phoenixes. The legend 見本 (Mihon, meaning 'Sample') is inscribed to the upper right of the denomination, identifying this piece as an official pattern or specimen. The entire design is enclosed within a fine beaded border.
