The "Tiroler Freiheit" issue commemorates the Tyrolean uprising of 1809, when Andreas Hofer led Bavarian-occupied Tyrolean peasants and marksmen in three successive insurrections against Napoleonic forces. Hofer's guerrilla campaign briefly succeeded — his forces twice retook Innsbruck — before Napoleon's Treaty of Schönbrunn sealed Tyrol's fate and left Hofer isolated. He was captured in early 1810 and executed by firing squad in Mantua on February 20th.
This was one of Austria's earliest postwar commemorative silver issues, arriving in 1959 at the 150th anniversary of the revolt.
