Issued to mark the 60th anniversary of the Soviet victory in the Great Patriotic War — the Eastern Front conflict that cost the Belarusian Soviet Socialist Republic an estimated quarter of its entire population, one of the highest per-capita losses of any territory in the war. Belarus lost somewhere between 2.2 and 3 million people between 1941 and 1944, a toll that remained central to national identity long after independence.
The National Bank of Belarus produced a considerable commemorative program around this anniversary year, of which KM#126 is one of the heavier silver issues.
