The Cyrillic legend РЭСПУБЛІКА БЕЛАРУСЬ arcs along the upper periphery, while the denomination ПЯЦЬДЗЕСЯТ РУБЛЁЎ curves along the lower periphery. Issued to mark the 60th anniversary of the Soviet victory in the Great Patriotic War — the Eastern Front conflict that cost the Belarusian Soviet Socialist Republic an estimated quarter of its entire population, one of the highest per-capita losses of any territory in the war. Belarus lost somewhere between 2.2 and 3 million people between 1941 and 1944, a toll that remained central to national identity long after independence.
The National Bank of Belarus produced a considerable commemorative program around this anniversary year, of which KM#126 is one of the heavier silver issues.
