Obverse description The centre field features the double-headed eagle design after Ivan Bilibin, rendered in relief within the aluminium bronze inner disc. A raised legend encircles the design along the copper-nickel outer ring, reading «50 РУБЛЕЙ 1994 г.» (50 ROUBLES 1994) at the top and «БАНК РОССИИ» (BANK OF RUSSIA) at the bottom, separated by decorative ornamental elements. The mint mark ЛМД, denoting the Leningrad Mint, appears in the field. The overall composition reflects the neoclassical revival style characteristic of early post-Soviet Russian coinage.

Reverse description The reverse presents a finely detailed relief portrait of the sandy mole-rat (Spalax arenarius) in its natural habitat, set against a background of stylised steppe vegetation. The design occupies the central aluminium bronze disc, showcasing the animal in profile with naturalistic modelling. The surrounding copper-nickel ring bears two Cyrillic legends separated by dot stops: «КРАСНАЯ КНИГА» (RED DATA BOOK) arching across the top and «ПЕСЧАНЫЙ СЛЕПЫШ» (SANDY MOLE-RAT) along the bottom. This coin belongs to the celebrated Red Data Book series issued by the Bank of Russia to commemorate endangered species.
