The 1972 coinage reform coincided with Hafez al-Assad consolidating power following his November 1970 "Corrective Movement" coup against the civilian Ba'ath leadership. This issue was part of a broader rebranding of Syrian coinage under the new regime — the party name on the coin was a deliberate political statement, embedding Ba'ath ideology into everyday commerce at a moment when Assad was still cementing his grip on state institutions.
