Obverse description The central field bears the national arms of the Democratic Republic of Sudan, depicting a secretary bird with outstretched wings perched upon a shield, with a scroll bearing an Arabic inscription at the base. The legend 'جمهورية السودان الديمقراطية' (Democratic Republic of Sudan) curves along the upper periphery in Arabic script. The Hijri year 1396 and the Gregorian year 1976 appear in Arabic-Eastern numerals at the lower portion of the field, flanking the arms. A continuous beaded border frames the entire design.

Additional information

The 1976 Sudanese cooperative series was issued to promote the national rural cooperative movement — a cornerstone of Nimeiry's socialist economic program during the mid-1970s, when the government was aggressively pushing collective agricultural schemes across the country. Sudan's economy at the time depended heavily on international development loans, and these commemorative issues were partly a domestic messaging exercise. The cooperatives themselves largely collapsed within a decade as debt obligations mounted and the agricultural sector deteriorated.
