Obverse description Intaglio-printed note with an oval portrait vignette of Queen Victoria in regal attire at left, set within an elaborate guilloche border. The bank title appears in a central cartouche, with the promise-to-pay text and Melbourne place of issue inscribed below. The Royal coat of arms is contained within an oval frame at right, with the denomination numeral 50 repeated in each corner.

Reverse description Multicoloured back printed in blue, red and green, with three repeated oval portrait vignettes of Queen Victoria arranged horizontally across the note. Each vignette is surrounded by fine guilloche work, with the denomination numeral 50 appearing in each corner. The word FIFTY is inscribed at the top centre within a guilloche medallion.
