50 Pfennigs valid until 1917

Dresden's city council issued this Kleingeldschein during the acute small-change shortage that paralyzed German retail commerce from 1916 onward — hoarding of metal coinage had stripped circulation of anything below a Mark. Municipal authorities across Germany were authorized to fill the gap with locally issued paper Kleingeld, and hundreds of cities obliged. Dresden's series was printed by Johannes Pässler, a local firm with deep roots in commercial printing rather than security work, which partly explains the relatively modest production values seen across this issue.

The "valid until 1917" notation printed on the face was a deliberate expiry mechanism intended to force redemption and prevent permanent displacement of Reichsbank currency — though enforcement proved uneven.
