Wemding issued this zinc notgeld piece in 1917, when the wartime metal requisitions that had stripped German municipalities of copper and nickel forced local authorities to mint emergency coinage from whatever industrial metals remained available. Zinc was deeply unpopular for this purpose — it corrodes readily in circulation and imparts a dull, unpleasant strike — but by mid-war there was little choice. Most surviving examples show the characteristic surface oxidation and minor lamination flaws inherent to the alloy.
