Calbe an der Milde is a small town in the Altmark region of Saxony-Anhalt, and its Verkehrs-Verein — a local trade and transport association — was among the thousands of municipal and commercial bodies that stepped in to fill the coin shortage that gripped Germany from 1916 onward. Reichsbank metal was being consumed by the war effort, and small-denomination coinage simply vanished from daily commerce. Notgeld of this type was the practical fix.
A print run of over twelve million pieces for a town of this size is striking — suggesting the notes circulated well beyond Calbe itself, possibly serving a broader regional clearing function.
