Issued by a small regional savings institution in Schleswig-Holstein, this zinc notgeld piece emerged from the acute metal shortages of 1917, when the German war economy had long since redirected copper and nickel toward shell casings and military hardware. Municipal banks, cooperatives, and even private businesses were permitted — and in many cases effectively forced — to produce their own emergency coinage to keep local commerce functioning.
Preetz was a modest market town, and the Spar- und Leihkasse's issue circulated within a tight geographic radius.
