50 Pfennig - Pirmasens

Pirmasens issued zinc notgeld in 1917 as the German imperial coinage system buckled under wartime metal requisitions — copper, nickel, and silver were diverted to the war effort, leaving municipal administrations to fill the void with whatever base metal remained available. The city was already well known as the center of Germany's shoe manufacturing industry, a concentration so dense that by 1917 nearly the entire working population was employed in that single trade.
