| Obverse description | Central field bears the municipal coat of arms of Pirmasens, depicting a fortified city gate with towers above and a rampant lion displayed in the upper portion of the shield, flanked by the date 19-17 on either side. The arms are set within a square shield rendered in low relief. A dotted inner border encircles the central device, and the peripheral legend reads VERWALTUNG DER STADT PIRMASENS, separated by star ornaments, running along the octagonal rim. A further dotted border frames the outer edge of the coin. |

Pirmasens issued zinc notgeld in 1917 as the German imperial coinage system buckled under wartime metal requisitions — copper, nickel, and silver were diverted to the war effort, leaving municipal administrations to fill the void with whatever base metal remained available. The city was already well known as the center of Germany's shoe manufacturing industry, a concentration so dense that by 1917 nearly the entire working population was employed in that single trade.
The Funck reference lists two die variants under this type, distinguished in Men18 as 25724.5 and 25724.6.
