J. Ph. Link operated a chain of Luitpold automats — self-service vending establishments common in German cities before the First World War — and issued zinc tokens like this one as proprietary currency redeemable only within their own machines or premises. The use of private pfennig-denominated tokens allowed operators to sidestep small-change shortages while locking customers into a closed monetary loop. Zinc was the material of necessity, not preference; copper and nickel were increasingly scarce for civilian use as the war years approached.
