Issued in 1918 by the District of Lauterbach in Hesse, this is a product of Germany's wartime Notgeld emergency — a system that forced hundreds of local authorities, municipalities, and even private firms to mint their own small-denomination coins when the central government's metal coinage essentially disappeared from circulation.
