Issued in 1918 by the District of Lauterbach in Hesse, this is a product of Germany's wartime Notgeld emergency — a system that forced hundreds of local authorities, municipalities, and even private firms to mint their own small-denomination coins when the central government's metal coinage essentially disappeared from circulation. Iron was the fallback precisely because copper, nickel, and zinc had been requisitioned for the war effort, leaving local administrations scrambling for whatever ferrous scrap the foundries could still process.
