A frieze band across the architrave carries the Latin inscription 'DULCE ET DECORA EST PRO PATRIA MORI', and the denomination '50 PFENNIG 50' appears in a cartouche at the upper portion of the panel. Kreissparkasse Neustadt am Rübenberge was one of hundreds of district savings banks that resorted to issuing Notgeld during the early 1920s as small-denomination Reichsmark coinage effectively vanished from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply inadequate in volume for the postwar economy. This particular series was printed by Appelhans Verlag in Braunschweig, a firm better known for regional publishing than banknote production, which puts it squarely in the improvised, civilian character of the Kleingeldersatz wave.
The DeNG reference places it within a documented series of eight notes (suffixes .1 through .8), suggesting the Kreissparkasse issued multiple design variants under the same authorization.
