Krupp's consumer cooperative — the Konsum-Anstalt — functioned as a company store network serving workers at the Essen steelworks, and these small-denomination notes were issued as internal scrip redeemable only within that system. The practical effect was to keep wages cycling back through Krupp's own retail infrastructure, a common enough arrangement in large German industrial concerns of the Wilhelmine period but one Krupp pursued at exceptional scale.

The physical smallness of the note is not incidental — pieces this size were produced cheaply and in volume, intended for daily grocery transactions, not savings.
