The Haus der Schiffergesellschaft is one of Lübeck's oldest guild halls, dating to 1535, originally serving the shipmasters' and seafarers' guild as a meeting place and charitable institution. This note belongs to the vast wave of German Notgeld issued by municipalities, businesses, and private organizations during the postwar inflation crisis — by 1921, small-denomination coinage had virtually vanished from circulation, forcing entities of all kinds to print their own emergency substitutes.
Eugen Radtke was a Lübeck-based printer working out of Mühlenstraße, responsible for several local Notgeld issues during this period. The designer credit to W. Günteritz is relatively uncommon for Notgeld of this type — most small municipal issues went uncredited.
