Bechstein, Ilmenau. Flanking the arch are two oval portrait medallions of Goethe in silhouette, dated 1776 at left and 1831 at right, each inscribed 'GOETHE', set against yellow grounds within decorative red-ruled frames. The lower register carries the bold letterpress inscription 'NOTGELD DER STADT ILMENAU, 1921' with validity text, a circular city seal, the Oberbürgermeister's manuscript signature, and a Goethe verse in script: 'Wie kehrt ich oft mit wechselndem Geschicke, erhabner Berg an deinen Fuß zurücke.' |

Below the arch, a decorative cartouche bears the title 'Wandrers Nachtlied' in script, followed by the full text of Goethe's celebrated poem. The outer border throughout consists of a repeating foliate guilloche in green and red, with the denomination numeral '50' in circular cartouches at each upper corner. |
