Obverse description Central vignette in a semicircular arch presents a colour lithograph of the Kickelhahn tower amid a dense Thuringian forest, captioned 'Turm auf dem Kickelhahn' above and attributed to M. Bechstein, Ilmenau. Flanking the arch are two oval portrait medallions of Goethe in silhouette, dated 1776 at left and 1831 at right, each inscribed 'GOETHE', set against yellow grounds within decorative red-ruled frames. The lower register carries the bold letterpress inscription 'NOTGELD DER STADT ILMENAU, 1921' with validity text, a circular city seal, the Oberbürgermeister's manuscript signature, and a Goethe verse in script: 'Wie kehrt ich oft mit wechselndem Geschicke, erhabner Berg an deinen Fuß zurücke.'

Reverse description A semicircular colour lithograph vignette occupies the upper portion, presenting the Goethehäuschen — a rustic timber hut on the Kickelhahn hillside — with a solitary figure seated before it and a panoramic mountain landscape receding into the distance; the scene is captioned 'Goethehäuschen' at lower right. Below the arch, a decorative cartouche bears the title 'Wandrers Nachtlied' in script, followed by the full text of Goethe's celebrated poem. The outer border throughout consists of a repeating foliate guilloche in green and red, with the denomination numeral '50' in circular cartouches at each upper corner.
