E. Merck's Darmstadt chemical and pharmaceutical firm issued notgeld during the acute coin shortages of World War I, when the German government's metal demands stripped small-denomination coinage from everyday commerce almost entirely. Private industrial firms — particularly large employers with hundreds of workers needing change for canteen purchases and wage transactions — had little choice but to produce their own emergency currency. Zinc was the pragmatic selection: copper and nickel had long since been redirected to the war effort.
