At centre, a circular red vignette bears the white rearing horse of the Brunswick coat of arms over a hatched ground. Braunschweigische Staatsbank was one of the few German state banks still operating as a semi-independent institution during the early Weimar inflation period, and its 1921 Kleingeldscheine series — small-denomination emergency notes filling the chronic coin shortage — were produced locally by Appelhans, a Braunschweig printer better known for commercial and academic work than banknote production. The 50 Pfennig denomination sat at the practical core of everyday transactions at a moment when metal coinage had essentially vanished from circulation due to hoarding and rising metal values.
