| Obverse description | Grey-toned note with stylised foliate scroll borders framing the entire design. At centre, a circular red vignette bears the white rearing horse of the Brunswick coat of arms over a hatched ground. The denomination '50 Pfennig' appears in large numerals to either side of the central vignette, with the issuer name 'Braunschweigische Staatsbank' in bold Gothic blackletter across the lower half. Braunschweigische Staatsbank was one of the few German state banks still operating as a semi-independent institution during the early Weimar inflation period, and its 1921 Kleingeldscheine series — small-denomination emergency notes filling the chronic coin shortage — were produced locally by Appelhans, a Braunschweig printer better known for commercial and academic work than banknote production. The 50 Pfennig denomination sat at the practical core of everyday transactions at a moment when metal coinage had essentially vanished from circulation due to hoarding and rising metal values.
