The Bäcker-Innung — the bakers' guild — of Lübeck was among hundreds of German trade and craft associations that stepped into the currency vacuum of 1921, issuing their own emergency scrip as chronic coin shortages made small-denomination transactions nearly impossible. The Liedertafel designation is the curious detail here: a Liedertafel was strictly a male choral society, suggesting this particular Notgeld was issued under the organizational umbrella of the guild's singing club rather than the guild's commercial body — an arrangement that was legally convenient and administratively common in tightly knit German craft associations of the period.
Lübeck's municipal and institutional Notgeld from this year was largely printed locally, and this piece follows that pattern.
