| Obverse description | Cream-toned note with a decorative red and black interlace border enclosing a guilloche underprint of large numerals '50' on both sides. At centre, an oval cartouche bearing the historic city seal of Lörrach dated 1756, surrounded by elaborate scrollwork and displaying a stylised bird in flight. Text inscriptions appear in two columns flanking the vignette, with the serial number at lower left, the Bürgermeister's manuscript signature below centre, and the issuing authority 'GEMEINDERAT VON LÖRRACH' along the lower margin. Lörrach notgeld from the 1918–1923 emergency currency period, issued by the city council rather than a banking institution — a common municipal arrangement when the Reichsbank could not keep fractional coinage in circulation fast enough to meet local demand. Poppen & Ortmann of Freiburg produced a substantial volume of notgeld for Baden municipalities during this period, working in lithography rather than intaglio, which kept unit costs low but left the notes vulnerable to relatively crude counterfeiting.
The designer credit to K. Freund is uncommon enough in the broader notgeld corpus to be worth noting — most municipal issues of this type went unsigned.
