Lehesten is a small quarrying town in the Thuringian Slate Mountains, historically dependent on roofing slate extraction — an industry that kept a tight, insular local economy running well into the twentieth century. This note is Notgeld, issued during the acute small-change shortage that followed Germany's post-war inflation spiral, when municipalities across the country were effectively forced to print their own fractional currency because Reichsmark coinage had been hoarded or melted.
Merzdorf & Frosch in nearby Saalfeld produced a large volume of Thuringian municipal Notgeld during this period, making them a regional workhorse printer rather than a prestige house. The single Obenaus signature belongs to a local official, almost certainly the Bürgermeister or a designated treasury signatory.
