正面铭文 Gutschein der Stadt ETTLINGEN über FÜNFZIG PFENNIGE
DER GEMEINDERAT
19 21
背面描述 The reverse is printed in red, black, and gold on white paper in an expressionist woodcut style, enclosed by a black decorative border with foliate corner ornaments. A large central rectangular vignette rendered in bold woodcut technique illustrates a historical scene with several figures in period costume gathered in an outdoor setting before a town silhouette with a church tower and radiant sun; the composition references a local Ettlingen legend. A two-line verse in Gothic script appears above the vignette and a further two-line verse in Gothic script is printed below.

备注

Ettlingen's 1921 Pfennig notgeld belongs to the second major wave of German municipal emergency money, issued as the Reichsbank's inability to keep small denomination coins in circulation became chronic. The town contracted locally with Schnarrenberger rather than one of the larger specialist notgeld printers — firms like Giesecke & Devrient or the Düsseldorfer Druckerei — which gives this piece a distinctly regional character in its typography and presswork.

By mid-1921, notgeld had crossed from necessity into a semi-commercial market; municipalities quickly realized collectors were buying and never redeeming. Whether Ettlingen issued with that calculus in mind is unconfirmed, but the short redemption windows written into most Baden-region Kleingeldscheine suggest they knew exactly what they were doing.
